“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go!”
Dr. Seuss, I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!

Little Free Libraries are a global phenomenon. The small, front-yard book exchanges number more than 100,000 around the world in over 100 countries – from Iceland to Tasmania to Pakistan and now, the Friends of the Tipton County Public Library, are pleased to provide “Little Free Libraries” to the rural communities of Tipton County.

Traditional libraries are wonderful resources that many communities enjoy. Schools do a great job of providing a strong foundation for learning to read and write. But these resources alone are not enough.

Many studies have shown that reading at home is essential for school readiness and school success. It has long been known that reading aloud is the single most important thing you can do to help a child prepare for reading and learning. Children who are not ready for school fall behind quickly and may never catch up, resulting in a much higher possibility of dropping out of school.

Libraries are not in every community, and that’s especially true in Tipton County’s rural areas. Distance to Tipton County’s two public libraries, hours and even their lending policies can pose a challenge for some families.

For these reasons and more, it’s important for our communities to come together to provide better access to books, for both children and adults.

The Friends of the Tipton County Public Library have added eight “Little Free Libraries” throughout Tipton County – Atoka, Brighton, Covington, Drummonds, Garland, Mason, Randolph, and at the Tipton County Museum in Covington – the book exchanges are there for all to enjoy. Feel free to take a book, leave a book and to pass on a book!

But for continued success, we need community support to maintain the Little Free Libraries. There are several ways YOU can help!

  • Book donations – drop off a book or two at a Little Free Library location or if you have a lot of books, we’d LOVE to take your donation at the Tipton County Public LIbrary.
  • Monetary donations will help the Friends purchase a variety of books for the Little Free Libraries for all ages.
  • Periodically check on the Little Free LIbrary closest to you to see if more books are needed and let us know, or feel free to add some yourself!
